Starting a house interior design project

The first stage of any house interior design project involves drawing a rough sketch of the outline of the room. Try mentally to strip the room of all its embellishments and concentrate on the structure itself. Next measure the lengths of walls, projections and recesses and mark these on your drawing where appropriate. To double-check that you have the correct measurements, add together the individual lengths of features and see if they equate to the total wall length.

To complete your survey record, note details of the following:

ceiling height;
height, width and position of windows;
height, width and swing of doors;
services (gas point, radiators, plumbing, light switches and so on);
room orientation (does it face north, south, east or west?);
architectural features (dado, niche, arch, floor-level change, sloping ceiling and so on);
existing finishes (type, material, color and condition).
