The Handcart Trip Taught Me Fortitude
My husband and I went on a survival youth expedition one summer. It was when our daughter was still a baby and we just took her along. They wanted it to be as authentic as possible, down to the pioneer dress and pulling a handcart. They searched packs for contraband like candy and toothpaste. Kids medical bracelets and other things were allowed, of course, for safety reasons and there was a doctor and nurse on staff just in case of an emergency. We ended up with a really neat group of kids and were almost always one of the first carts at each camp stop. Our kids would often go back and help other families pull their carts into camp. At the end, we were tired and humbled, but it was a great experience.
